"Frozen" could have been a killer chiller

Wednesday, January 27, 2010 PARK CITY: "Frozen" delivers enough thrills and gory chills to satisfy the horror film crowd, but is not made well enough to be a first-rate thriller. A great premise in which three friends are stranded on a chairlift in the dead of winter is squandered to satisfy the expectations of the genre. The Anchor Bay Films release should scare up reasonable returns in theaters and after-markets from the usual suspects, but not beyond that. The main thing a writer and director needs to do in this kind of horror show is create a self-enclosed world that allows the audience to suspend disbelief and experience the full shock of the situation without asking "why didn't he?" and "how come?" questions. Hitchcock, of course, was a master of this. In this case, unfortunately, writer/director Adam Green is not. After Joe (Shawn Ashmore), Dan (Kevin Zegers) and his girlfriend Parker (Emma Bell) scam their way onto the slopes, it's

New technology gives 3-D views of arteries

Wednesday, January 27, 2010 WASHINGTON: Cardiologists could soon have 3-D images of patients' coronary arteries at their fingertips and better treat heart disease thanks to a new software unveiled by researchers on Tuesday. The technology, which has just been tested for the first time on people, remains in the early stages of testing, according to a feasibility study published in Circulation: Cardiovascular Interventions, an American Heart Association journal. "This is very exciting technology that holds great promise," study investigator John Carroll, a professor of medicine and director of interventional cardiology in the Division of Cardiology at the University of Colorado in Aurora, said in a statement. The study allows doctors to assess more accurately and rapidly the length, branching pattern and angles of heart arteries, as well as any blockages. Cardiologists currently use two-dimensional X-ray images shot from different angles to visualize arteries insi

US, allies to fund $500m to woo Taliban

Wednesday, January 27, 2010 WASHINGTON: The United States and its allies are expected to set up a $500 million integration fund at a conference in London this week to lure Taliban fighters to join the political mainstream. “We are going to go to London to affirm our international support for it,” said US special envoy Richard Holbrooke. “Money will be forthcoming for it. I can’t say how much. The Japanese are going to take the lead.” In an interview to media, Holbrooke said that the initiative would fill a gap in dealing with the Taliban because “there’s no good programme to invite them back into the fold”. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who is hosting the London conference, said the summit would “cover both our military and our political strategies, but concentrate on the political strategy for Afghanistan”. About 60 countries are expected to attend the conference. The United States is offering $100 million to set up the fund. In Berlin, German Chancellor Angela Merk

Man pulled from Haiti rubble after quake

Wednesday, January 27, 2010 PORT-AU-PRINCE: The US military pulled a Haitian man alive from under the rubble in Port-au-Prince Tuesday, but it was not clear whether he had been trapped since the January 12 quake or more recently. The middle-aged man was covered with dust, had facial injuries and appeared to have lost weight. Soldiers at the scene said he may have been a looter who became stuck in recent days when a damaged building collapsed. Specialist Andrew Pourak said the man had "possibly" been trapped under the rubble for the past two weeks, but that he may also have become caught in the last several days amid the chaos that followed the disaster. "We don't know if he was there from the beginning or in one of the aftershocks he may have gone under," Pourak told media. Haiti has been hit by at least 50 tremors since the original quake. The man reportedly had a crushed leg and had been transported to a hospital.

Guantanamo Yemeni calls for trial in US federal system

Wednesday, January 27, 2010 WASHINGTON: Defense lawyers for a Yemeni man accused of being an aide to Osama bin Laden launched an appeal Tuesday against his life sentence, arguing he had the right to a new trial before a US federal court. Ali Hamza Ahmad al-Bahlul, said to have been an aide and media secretary to the Al-Qaeda leader, was convicted in November 2008 by a military commission at the US naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on charges of conspiracy, solicitation to murder and terrorist acts, as well as providing material support for terrorism. But his lawyer told a Washington appeals court that Bahlul had the right to a new trial in a federal court, and contested the evidence used to convict his client. The main evidence rested on a video dating from October 2000 which the prosecution says was used to recruit new Al-Qaeda members. "He may have advocated violence, anti-semitism and violence against women, but none of those
