Ayotallah Khamenei orders probe into Mousavi’s claims

Monday, June 15, 2009, TEHRAN: Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has told the top election supervisory body to examine defeated presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi's complaints, state television said on Monday.Mousavi lodged a formal protest with the Guardians Council calling for it to annul the result of Friday's presidential election which he lost to hardliner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, complaining of vote-rigging."The Guardians Council has been advised to precisely examine the letter," state television quoted Khamenei as telling Mousavi during a meeting on Sunday.A spokesperson for the council, said the 12-member body would meet on Tuesday with Mousavi to discuss the complaint."The results of the presidential election were sent today by the ministry of interior and we will exmamine them."Tomorrow the council will hold a meeting with these people (Mousavi and candidate Mohsen Rezai) to hear their views and we will inform them the way we wo

Bangladesh seek US help for border security

Monday, June 15, 2009, DHAKA: Bangladeshi Home Minister Sahara Khatun said the United States would provide support to Bangladesh in holding the trial of war criminals and combating global terrorism.She stated this to reporters after a meeting with visiting US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Robert Blake at the home ministry.The home minister told the State Department senior official that the people want the trial of the war criminals, one of the main election pledges of the present government. Monday, June 15, 2009 RAMAT GAN: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday endorsed for the first time the creation of a Palestinian state, provided it was demilitarised, after weeks of pressure from Washington.The White House called his speech "an important step forward." But Netanyahu also said the Palestinians must recognise the Jewish character of Israel, a condition Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas has long rejected. Monday, June 15, 2009 LONDON: England restricted Sri Lanka's run chase to 69-8 as they comfortably won their World Twenty20 encounter to reach the semi-finals of the competition.Claire Taylor hit an undefeated 75 as England posted 140-7. Isa Guha returned figures of 2-4 with two maidens from her four overs as Sri Lanka fell 72 runs short of victory. Australia restricted West Indies to 135-8 before Shelley Nitschke hit 58 as her team won by eight wickets. Deandra Dottin struck 53 off just 25 deliveries at the top of the innings for the West Indies, with nine fours in her belligerent knock.But Sarah Andrews and Lisa Sthalekar both took two wickets as Australia ensured they had a manageable target to chase. Sunday, June 14, 2009 LONDON: Sri Lanka preserved their unbeaten record at the World Twenty20 with a nine run Super Eights win over Ireland at Lord's on Sunday but only after they'd been given a huge fright by the minnows.Chasing 145, Ireland openers provided a solid start of 59 runs in 9.1 overs but the Sri Lankan spinning pair of Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis controlled the situation and Ireland wickets were falling at regular intervals. However, Ireland were on 135 for seven when 20 overs were completed.Their top scorers were captain William Porterfield, Niall Obrien and John Mooney. They all made 31 runs each.For Sri Lanka, pacer Lasith Malinga and off-break bowler Mendis claimed two wickets for 19 and 22 runs, respectively.
