Davydenko stuns Nadal to take Shanghai title

Sunday, October 18, 2009 SHANGHAI: Russian Nikolay Davydenko stunned top seed Rafael Nadal 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 Sunday to win the Shanghai Masters.World-ranked two Nadal, on his way back from injury, has now lost his last two finals, the previous one in Madrid five months ago to Roger Federer.After winning the Shanghai Masters title, Davydenko enhanced his chances of qualifying for the ATP World Tour Finals in London. Roger Federer, Nadal, Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin del Potro are the only players assured of their place at the showpiece finale to the season at the O2 Arena next month. Saturday, October 17, 2009 SHANGHAI: Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Nikolay Davydenko and Feliciano Lopez moved in to the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters here on Friday.In the first men’s singles quarter-finals of the tournament being played at the Zhong Central Arena in Shanghai, Nikolay Davydenko moved closer to a spot in next month's season-ending showpiece in London with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 defeat of Radek Stepanek.The Russian sixth seed, who missed three months of the season with injuries but has still reached a dozen quarter-finals in 2009, leapfrogged Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Chile's Fernando Gonzalez to currently stand a provisional ninth in the race to the World Tour Finals.Three places remain up for grabs in the eight-man field with a month of the regular ATP season to go.Davydenko, aged 28, next faces Djokovic standing 0-3 in the series.In other quarter-finals, Spain's unseeded Feliciano Lopez continued his winning streak of the season, producing his best...

Thursday, October 15, 2009 HONG KONG: Rafael Nadal celebrated an opening-round win in grand slam style while Novak Djokovic moved through ruthlessly as the top two seeds reached the third round of the Shanghai Masters Wednesday.Nadal, crushed in a Beijing semi-final by Marin Cilic four days ago, could not control his fist pumps and enthusiasm after getting back on track over James Blake 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4.Second seed Djokovic, the Beijing champion, defeated Italian Fabio Fognini 6-3, 6-1.It was the opposite story for third seed Juan Martin Del Potro as the US Open champion crashed for a second straight week in Asia. The luckless Argentine fell to Jurgen Melzer due to wrist tendonitis, stopping to hand over a 7-5, 2-1 win.In Tokyo last week, Del Potro had complained of feeling listless and unable to find his game.
