Beckham axed, while Macienne gets surprise England call-up

LONDON: David Beckham has been axed from Fabio Capello's 23-man England squad for Wednesday's friendly against Germany in Berlin, while there was a s urprise call-up for Chelsea defender Michael Mancienne. Capello left out Beckham because the LA Galaxy midfielder hasn't played since the Major League season ended on October 26. Beckham is due to join AC Milan on loan in January and could get the chance to equal Bobby Moore's tally of 108 caps in England's next friendly against Spain in February. Mancienne, 20, is yet to play a game for Chelsea but Capello has been impressed by his performances on loan for Championship leaders Wolverhampton and the England Under-21 team. Uncapped Aston Villa duo Gabriel Agbonlahor and Curtis Davies are also included, as is John Terry even though the England captain is due to have a scan on a foot injury he suffered in Chelsea's 3-0 win at West Bromich on Saturday. There were also recalls for in-form Tottenham striker Darren Bent a

Katrina Kaif’s identity hijacked

Producers, directors, co-ordinators, Hollywood agents, media persons and others — be warned! Katrina Kaif does not have an e-mail id, which reads katrinakaif84@hotmail.com. Apparently, an impersonator has been using this e-mail id for the past few days. This has obviously inconvenienced Katrina no end. Our source said, “Looks like this impersonator is obsessed with Katrina but little does he/she realise that it is absolutely unethical to send out e-mails posing as someone else. Katrina is quite hassled.” Katrina discovered this impersonation only last week when a media person brought it to her notice. Our source revealed, “Last week, a lady journalist called Katrina and told her that she had received an e-mail from her. Katrina was shocked because she had not sent an e-mail to that journalist. That’s when Katrina realised that somebody was impersonating her and fooling people. We don’t know how many mails this impersonator may have sent.” Speaking from Goa, where she is shooting for R

Obama most-threatened prez-elect in history

WASHINGTON: Threats against a new president historically spike right after an election, but from Maine to Idaho, law enforcement officials are seeing more against Obama than ever before. The Secret Service would not comment or provide the number of cases they are investigating. But since the November 4 election, law enforcement officials have seen more potentially threatening writings, internet postings and other activity directed at Obama than has been seen with any past president-elect, said officials. Earlier this week, the Secret Service looked into the case of a sign posted on a tree in Vay, Idaho, with Obama’s name and the offer of a “free public hanging”. In North Carolina, civil rights officials complained of racist graffiti targeting Obama. And in a Maine convenience store, a reporter saw a sign inviting customers to join a betting pool on when Obama might fall victim to an assassin.

Eleven killed as bus overturns in China

BEIJING: Eleven people were killed and 39 injured when a speeding bus overturned on an expressway in northeast China's Heilongjiang province, state media reported. Officials said the bus, carrying 50 passengers, was travelling at 130 kilometres (81 miles) per hour when it crashed on Saturday afternoon, according to Xinhua news agency. "Patrolling traffic police and highway administration staff had asked the driver to slow down, but he didn't listen," said Wang Wenbo, of the Heilongjiang highway administration, according to the report. China's roads are among the most dangerous in the world and bus drivers routinely cram passengers into their vehicles to get as much business as they can in one trip. There were more fatalities on roads in the country last year than anywhere else in the world, according to an earlier Xinhua report, with more than 81,000 people killed, an average of about 223 a day. Hijacked ship Stolt Valor with 18 Indians on board released in Somalia

NEW DELHI: Japanese vessel MT Stolt Valor, that had been hijacked near the Gulf of Aden on September 15 with 22 crew, including 18 Indians, on board, was released on Sunday. The Stolt Valor crew also had one Bangladeshi, two Filipinos and one Russian. Chairman of NSFA said that all crew members are safe. Seema Goyal, wife of captain Prabhat Goyal onboard the ship, is said to have received the information from the company which owns the ship. Initial reports suggested that the demands of the pirates were met after prolonged negotiations. The Japanese company reportedly paid the ransom to the pirates. Soon after this news, Seema Goyal, who has been crusading for the early release of the Indians on board said, "I am so happy today. Finally the wait is over. I received a call from the company and Japanese officials today morning and they informed me that the pirates have released the ship, which was held in captive for over 2 months now." She further added, "The ship is on i
