Amazing pictures of the UK's first ever eyelash transplant

How's this for a winning flutter? It’s the bare-lid Before and awesome After of the UK’s first eyelash transplant. The £3,500 procedure was done on this unidentified girl of 19 who for most of her life suffered trichotillomania – obsessive plucking or pulling out hair. And the patient, from Stockport, Cheshire, said: “The results are just amazing. The treatment sounded too good to be true at first as I’d almost accepted I’d never have real lashes again. Now I’m so glad I went ahead.” The four-hour operation involves taking hair from the back of the head and placing individual strands into cuts in the eyelid. The lashes then thicken up gradually between four and six months after the treatment. Shami Thomas, of Transform, which performed the surgery pioneered in America, said: “An eyelash transplant is very safe, cost-effective and pain-free – and it can have life-changing effects.”

U.S. commander says Taliban have Afghan momentum

Monday, August 10, 2009 KABUL: The Taliban are advancing out of traditional strongholds in Afghanistan's south and east into the north and west, the commander of U.S. and NATO troops in the country said in an interview published on Monday. U.S. Army General Stanley McChrystal, who will soon present an assessment of the war, said the resurgent Taliban would force a change of tactics on foreign forces and warned that record casualty figures would remain high for some months. "It's a very aggressive enemy right now," McChrystal told The Wall Street Journal newspaper in an interview in Kabul. "We've got to stop their momentum, stop their initiative. It's hard work." Violence across Afghanistan this year had already reached its worst levels since the Taliban were ousted by U.S.-led Afghan forces in 2001 and escalated dramatically after major offensives were launched in the south over the past two months. Chelsea beat United to win Community Shield

Monday, August 10, 2009 WEMBLEY: Chelsea won the Community Shield defeating Manchester United through penalty kicks. This was the first big achievement of Carlo Ancelotti as manager. The match played at Wembley was an interesting contest from beginning to the end as both teams displayed the best game.Sir Alex Ferguson's team had taken an early lead when Nani drove home from the edge of the area. Ricardo Carvalho equalised after half-time before Lampard's controversial strike, but Wayne Rooney levelled for United in stoppage time. With United keen to prove a point to the critics questioning their ability to cope without Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez and Chelsea trying to impress new boss Carlo Ancelotti, there was a definite edge to a match that finished 2-2 after 90 minutes. However, the match decided on penalty kicks and Chelsea emerged victorious scoring four goals against one to win the title.
