Wednesday, August 12, 2009 NEW DELHI: Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan has asked for Mumbai schools, colleges and coaching classes to be shut for seven days as fears of the H1N1 virus grips the city. Multiplexes would also remain shut for the next three days.A Maharashtra schoolboy succumbed to swine flu just hours after three others in the state died of the same disease on Wednesday morning, officials said. With these deaths, the toll due to the viral infection has risen to 11 in the state and 15 in the country. Earlier, five people in Pune, two in Mumbai, two in Gujarat, one each in Tamil Nadu and Kerala had died of swine flu.

Wednesday, July 15, 2009 Mumbai: Heavy rains continued to lash the Mumbai for the third day on Wednesday. However, there was no water logging and road and rail traffic was not disrupted. Flights were delayed by a few minutes due to poor visibility at the airport. Rainfall recorded in the last 22 hours since 8.30 am yesterday was 240.1 mm, according to the weather office here. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea for the next 24 hours as the sea is rough to very rough with southwesterly to westerly waves, the Met office said. The weather office has forecasted frequent spells of rain or thundershowers with heavy to very heavy rain in parts of the city and suburbs. Strong gusty winds are also likely.

Tuesday, July 14, 2009, MUMBAI: Heavy rains in Mumbai crippled normal life on Tuesday. The heavy downpour accompanied by gusty winds since last evening led to traffic snarls at various places.Suburban trains were also running late due to water logging on the tracks.Several low lying areas including King’’s circle, Sion, Andheri Milan subway, Hind Mata were inundated.Visibility at Mumbai International Airport was described as poor. Airport sources said visibility was restricted to just 800 feet this morning.Water logging was reported at the Wadala truck terminus, Maratha Mandir, Khar, Andheri subways, Govandi and deonar colonies.For past many years monsoon rains have been playing havoc in the state bringing about chaos in the entire region.According to the city’s municipal officers, about a billion rupees are spent each year on bracing the city for the monsoon downpours. Yet rains continue to disrupt normal life.
