Hamilton poised to become youngest champion

SAO PAULO: England expects Lewis Hamilton to become Formula One's youngest world champion in Brazil on Sunday at the same circuit where last year he buckled under pressure and blew his chance. Brazil hopes Ferrari's Felipe Massa can somehow upset the odds and, with his home Interlagos crowd roaring him on, be crowned the country's first champion since the late Ayrton Senna in 1991. After last year's astonishing finale, with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen clawing back a seven-point deficit to prevent Hamilton becoming the first rookie to take the title, anything could happen. The only certainty is there will be a first-time champion. Hamilton, 23, is back with another seven-point advantage while Massa must win and hope the hand of fate favours him. All the McLaren driver has to do, to become Britain's first champion since Damon Hill in 1996 and his team's first since Mika Hakkinen in 1999, is finish fifth. That proved beyond him at Interlagos last year, despite sta

IOC chief Rogge confirms bid to stand again

BRUSSELS: International Olympics Committee president Jacques Rogge confirmed on Monday his intention to stand as a candidate for a second term. The 66-year-old Belgian told a press conference, "For two or three years journalists have been asking me the same question concerning my future. "I always replied by saying that I'd deal with it after the Beijing Games. On Friday, as the regulations stipulated, I informed IOC members of my decision. I will be a candidate for a second mandate." He identified two key issues facing the IOC - the ongoing fight against drugs and the drive to get more young people to take up sport. "The number one priority remains the battle against doping which we have to maintain. Secondly I want to see us getting even more young people involved in sport to combat against a sedentary lifestyle and obesity. "This must be the other major objective for the IOC in the next few years." Rogge defended his performance as IOC chief saying,

I have no problems with Maradona, says Messi

ROME: Argentina striker Lionel Messi has insisted he can work with new national coach Diego Maradona, despite his recent criticisms of the Barcelona star, Italian media reported Wednesday. Messi told sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport he had "no problems" with Tuesday's news that Maradona had been appointed coach, adding: "It's great, I admire him for what he has given Argentinian football." Maradona openly criticised Messi in September, saying the 21-year-old was selfish and arrogant. "Sometimes Messi plays for Messi. He feels so superior that he forgets his team-mates. It's Deportivo Messi (a one-man team). If he played with (Sergio) Aguero or (Juan Roman) Riquelme it would be better for him." But Messi insisted that Maradona's attack was now in the past and forgotten about. "These were things said in the moment. I know that Diego appreciates me," Messi told La Gazzetta dello Sport. Maradona, who will be 48 on Thursday, has no

Till bed do us apart!

We were lying in the bedroom, in the early minutes of sleep, and suddenly he jerked his hand, only to punch me hard on my eye with his elbow," recounts Jhanvi, a 36-year-old interior designer from Delhi. "I was already so sleep-deprived from his restlessness and snoring that I just told him, 'It's all over, honey'." Oops!! Jhanvi's husband of 9 years, who asked not to be identified, was soon moved into another bedroom. Does this scenario sound familiar? Well, Jhanvi and her beau are just one of the many loving couples who, because of snoring, restless legs, opposite schedules or other nocturnal difficulties, decide to sleep apart. It may be hard to believe, but the fact is that wedding dichotomy is changing, and several studies done by the National Sleep Foundation reveal that between 12% and 25% of married couples are sleeping separately. These studies also show that the trend is on the rise, moving to 13% between 2001 and 2008. We explore.... A growing

The death toll was tallied based on bodies that had been recovered and buried by Thursday, said Mohammad Dawud of the District Police Office in the hardest-hit Ziarat district. A quake-induced landslide there buried dozens of homes. The main quake struck just after 4 a.m., about 35 miles (60 km) north-northeast of Quetta, the capital of Balochistan.
