Haiti quake death toll may top 100,000: PM

WASHINGTON: The death toll in the Haiti quake could top 100,000, Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive told a US news channel Wednesday. The final death toll could be "well over 100,000," the prime minister told the US television channel after his Caribbean nation was struck Tuesday by a 7.0 quake. "I hope that is not true, because I hope the people had the time to get out. Because we have so much people on the streets right now, we don't know exactly where they were living. "But so many, so many buildings, so many neighborhoods totally destroyed, and some neighborhoods we don't even see people, so I don't know where those people are."

Thousands feared dead as major quake strikes Haiti

Wednesday, January 13, 2010 PORT-AU-PRINCE: A major earthquake rocked Haiti, killing possibly thousands of people as it toppled the presidential palace and hillside shanties alike and left the Caribbean nation appealing for international help. A five-story U.N. headquarters building was also brought down by Tuesday's 7.0 magnitude quake, the most powerful to hit Haiti in more than 200 years according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Television footage from the capital, Port-au-Prince, showed scenes of chaos on the streets with people sobbing and appearing dazed amid the rubble. The presidential palace lay in ruins, its domes fallen on top of flattened walls. The quake's epicenter was only 10 miles (16 km) from Port-au-Prince. Three Jordanian peacekeepers killed in Haiti quake: army

Wednesday, January 13, 2010 AMMAN: Three Jordanian peacekeepers were killed and 21 wounded in the massive earthquake that rocked Haiti, the army said on Wednesday. "Major Atta Manasir, Major Asharf Jaiusi and Corporal Raed Khawaldeh of the Jordanian peacekeeping force in Haiti died (in) the earthquake that hit the area on Tuesday night," an army spokesman said in a statement. "Twenty-one other members of the armed forces were slightly injured in the quake." The spokesman gave no further details.
