Why men cheat?

Your sudden weight gain or husband's dissatisfaction in bed is not what prompts him to cheat, says best-selling author and marriage counselor, who in his new book has unravelled what makes men stray. For his new book, Why Men Stray and What You Can Do To Prevent It , M Gary Neuman spent two years studying 100 men who had affairs and 100 men who were faithful. And he found that men cheat not because the other woman is prettier and slimmer, but because they aren't emotionally satisfied with their wives or girlfriends. "Only eight per cent of the cheating men said it was sexual dissatisfaction at home and 88 per cent said the mistress was not better-looking or in better shape than their wife," Metro.co.uk quoted Neuman as saying. He added, "The number one reason behind their cheating was the emotional dissatisfaction they felt in their marriage and the emotional connection they unfortunately developed in the affair." In fact, he found that around 69

Russian diplomat: Iran not yet able to build nuclear bomb

MOSCOW: A top Russian diplomat has hinted that his country's extensive spying network believes Iran is not yet able to build a nuclear bomb."One cannot say today that Iran can create nuclear weapons and the means of delivering them," said Vladimir Voronkov, head of the Russian foreign ministry's department of European cooperation. "This information is confirmed by all the services responsible for the collection and analysis of information." Voronkov, quoted by some news agencies on Tuesday, appeared to be drawing on information supplied by Moscow's intelligence services. Western countries, which believe that Iran is using an ostensibly peaceful atomic programme to secretly develop nuclear weapons, have persuaded the United Nations to impose economic sanctions on Tehran. Yet Russia has greater access to Iran's nuclear programme than most countries: one of its companies, Atomstroyexport, is building the Bushehr reactor on the humid Gulf coast, giving t

Nobel Peace winner urges Obama to focus on Mideast

OSLO: Nobel Peace Prize winner Martti Ahtisaari urged U.S. President-elect Barack Obama on Wednesday to start his term by giving ``high priority'' to the Mideast conflict, calling it the world's most challenging peace-building project. In his acceptance speech in Oslo, the Finnish diplomat and mediator also warned that the global financial crisis would strike hard at the developing world, and called on governments to not cut back on foreign aid.Insisting that ``all conflicts can be settled,'' Ahtisaari said he did not share the view that the decades-long violence between Israel and Palestinians would rage indefinitely. The 71-year-old former Finnish president was awarded what many consider the world's most coveted prize for his three decades of work mediating conflicts from Namibia to Kosovo and Indonesia. So far he has not sought a role to mediate in the Middle East. By selecting Ahtisaari for the prize, the Nobel committee returned its focus to traditional peace

Thousands march in Athens after riots

ATHENS: More than 10,000 people marched past burned out and looted shops in central Athens, heading toward Parliament after four nights of rioting sparked by the fatal police shooting of a teenager. The demonstration is part of a previously scheduled nationwide general strike, but is developing into a protest at the government's handling of the crisis.Labor unions rejected an appeal by Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis to cancel Wednesday rallies, saying Greeks have a right to protest economic hardship.Emergency services are on alert across the city. The fears of renewed rioting during the rallies and the general strike are adding pressure on Greece's increasingly beleaguered conservative government.

Italy plans temporary increase in Afghan force

ROME: Italy will temporarily increase its number of troops in Afghanistan by 500 next year in the face of a "delicate operational situation" in western Herat province, the government said on Wednesday."The commitments we have made within NATO demand that our contingent in Afghanistan reach the figure of 2,800 for six months in 2009," Defence Minister Ignazio La Russa told the Senate defence and foreign affairs committees.La Russa said the increase would respect the ceiling of 2,600 set by parliament for the deployment because it refers to an average over a 12-month period. The defence minister was speaking the day after meeting with visiting US General David Petraeus, commander of US forces in the Middle East and Central Asia, who said he favoured a US troop surge in Afghanistan.Petraeus said he had "already made recommendations" for an almost doubling of the US force based on requests from General David McKiernan, the top commander of US and NATO troops i

General strike adds to protest woes in Greece

ATHENS: The Greek government on Wednesday defended its response to the crisis that has gripped the country since a teenager was fatally shot in a police confrontation last weekend, saying that officials in Athens had chosen not to crack down on a violent minority in an effort to avoid further bloodshed.Even as new clashes erupted during a general strike that disrupted transport, schools and other services across Greece, a government spokesman said that he expected the crisis to tail off."I think it's going to fade out," said Panos Livadas, general secretary of the Information Ministry. "I think reason will prevail. I also think we will keep on doing our best not to have a future risk of innocent life. No more innocent blood. It's O.K. if we have to wait a day or two."The statement coincided with an offer by Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis to compensate shopkeepers whose premises have been damaged in the riots that have swept Greece since Saturday, when the
