Girls’ students protest in H-Kashmir against Indian atrocities

Thursday, June 11, 2009 ,SRI NAGAR: Students of different colleges and schools took to streets to lodge their protest against the killing of two women, including a student, after their rape by Indian troops in Shopian in held Kashmir on May 30.Chairman of the Hurriyat Conference (HC) Syed Ali Shah Geelani had appealed to the students to protest the incident in the afternoon.Students took to streets and marched on different streets. The students of other educational institutions also took similar processions.Raising pro-freedom slogans, the students were demanding immediate arrest of those involved in the incident.A report from Baramulla said students of degree colleges and other educational institutions also led processions in the town, raising slogans against the authorities for failing to take any action against people involved in the Shopian incident.

UN Council set to expand N Korea sanctions

Thursday, June 11, 2009 The UN Security Council is set to vote on a draft resolution expanding sanctions on North Korea after it carried out a second nuclear test.According to a draft leaked on Wednesday, the UN resolution would extend an arms embargo on Pyongyang, further limit its financial dealings and authorise searches of ships suspected of carrying weapons and nuclear materials.The US-drafted resolution also bans the supply of fuel to North Korean vessels carrying cargo that might be a violation of UN trade and arms embargoes against Pyongyang, media reports said.The UN Security Council was discussing the draft at a closed meeting after the five permanent members - the US, UK, China, Russia and France - and Japan and South Korea agreed the text of draft.The resolution would also allow member states who suspect ships carrying suspect material to North Korea to direct the vessels to "an appropriate and convenient port for the required inspection by the local authorities"

Rudd calls for calm after Indian racial violence

Thursday, June 11, 2009 CANBERRA: Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd warned against vigilante action and called for calm on Wednesday after ethnic Indians protested in Sydney and allegedly attacked three men in retaliation for what they say is racially motivated violence.Recent attacks on Indians, including the stabbing of a student in Melbourne last month, have sparked student-led rallies in Sydney and Melbourne and top-level talks with India over concerns that some of the 90 000 Indian students in Australia are being targeted.Police say some violence is racially motivated, but much of it is ordinary crime. Air France crash search to go on until June 19

Thursday, June 11, 2009 RECIFE: The search in the Atlantic for more bodies and debris from a downed Air France jetliner is to continue until at least June 19, Brazilian officials said Wednesday."The search can continue at least up to the 19th (of June)" given currents in the area being scoured, air force spokesman Brigadier Ramon Cardoso told reporters in the northeastern city of Recife. "That's the time with the currents that are there... still give the possibility of recovering bodies," he said. He added that the period may be extended if conditions permitted, and stressed that more bodies may yet be found. Brazilian and French navy crews have so far recovered 41 bodies from the search area 1,100 kilometers (700 miles) off Brazil's coast. The Air France plane was carrying 228 people when it crashed June 1 as it was flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris.

NATO troop among 57 killed in Afghan insurgency

Thursday, June 11, 2009 KABUL: A NATO soldier is among 57 people -- most of them militants -- killed in new attacks, air strikes and clashes in an intensifying insurgency in Afghanistan, authorities said Wednesday. Afghan and international security forces, who have stepped up operations ahead of August 20 elections, meanwhile destroyed Taliban heroin labs that bankroll the insurgents, the NATO-led force announced. The International Security Assistance Force soldier was killed in a "hostile incident" in southern Afghanistan on Wednesday, the 40-nation ISAF said in a statement that did not give the nationality of the trooper. The US military said meanwhile it had killed a Taliban commander with reported links to Iran's Revolutionary Guards and up to 16 militants with him in a precision air strike in the west on Tuesday. The strike was called in against Mullah Mustafa, who commanded about 100 men, as he travelled in the western province of Ghor, it said in a statement. "

Women T20 WC begins today

Thursday, June 11, 2009 LONDON: The inaugural ICC Women's Twenty/20 World Cup gets underway today with the West Indies facing South Africa in the opening game at Taunton in England.Pakistan will play its first match against Sri Lanka tomorrow.The tournament will feature the top eight teams in the world; the teams have been divided in two groups.Coached by Sherwin Campbell, the West Indies women team is packed with raw talent including Jamaicans Stefanie Taylor and Shennell Daley.However, the team finished fifth at the World Cup, is light on experience.Hosts England with the world's best batswoman, Clare Taylor, will then meet India in the day's second game.England are the current world champions while Indian was third at the World Cup in Australia.

Twenty20 WC moves into Super8 round today

Thursday, June 11, 2009,The Super Eight round of ICC Twenty20 World Cup is kicking off today.Pakistan will face Sri Lanka in their opening match of the Super Eight tomorrow at the Lord’s of London. Abdur Razzaq would play from the Pakistani side in place of injured Yasser Arafat; he was allowed by the ICC technical committee.Australia, Bangladesh, Scotland and the Netherlands have all departed the World Cup following the group stages. The eight qualifiers are divided into two pre-determined groups, E and F. Group E is made up of the top seeds from groups A and C and the second seeds from groups B and D, with the reverse in Group F. Each country plays three Super Eight games. West Indies and Ireland take the seedings of the departed Australia and Bangladesh. The top two from each group progress to the semi-finals.The first match will be played between the teams of Ireland and New Zealand and the second one to be played between England and South Africa.

Razzaq cleared for Pakistan World T20 call-up

Thursday, June 11, 2009 LONDON: All-rounder Abdul Razzaq was on Wednesday given the all-clear to replace injured Yasir Arafat in Pakistan's World Twenty20 squad, the International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed. The 29-year-old Razzaq cut his ties with the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL) earlier this month and was cleared by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to play for the national team.Fast bowler Arafat suffered a hamstring injury during Pakistan's 48-run defeat against England in their opening match on Sunday. Razzaq, who played 46 Tests and 231 one-day internationals for Pakistan, joined the unofficial ICL as a protest against his omission from the squad selected for the inaugural World Twenty20 in South Africa in 2007. The PCB barred all the 23 players who signed for the rebel league from domestic and international cricket as the ICL was not recognised by the ICC and Board of Control for Cricket in India.
