Section 144 imposed in Sindh for 15 days

KARACHI: City Police Chief Wasim Ahmed told Geo News that the police received intelligence reports about threats of terrorism during lawyers’ long march in Sindh.Speaking from the police headquarter here, he said that nobody would be allowed to disturb the law and order situation in the province. Therefore, Section 144 was imposed in Sindh for two weeks following Punjab. He said: “The ban on pillion riding has been extended for one more month which will remain effective till April 10.”“We have neither planned any crackdown nor any arrest is made,” he said, but added that violation of Section 144 would not be tolerated.He waned that arrests could be made under Section 144 if anybody tried to take out rally or procession.

Iftikhar denounces attack on Bilour

PESHAWAR: NWFP Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain has condemned an attempt to assassinate Senior Minister Bashir Ahmed Bilour and termed it a ‘cowardly’ act.In a statement issued here on Wednesday, the information minister said that some anti-state elements don’t want to see peace and prosperity in Pakhtuns’ region.“Pakhtun are champions of peace and progress and such cowardly acts of terrorism cannot scare them,” he said.Hussain further said that followers of Bacha Khan could not be stopped from the mission of peace and non-violence.

Governor calls PA session on March 16, Speaker on 18

LAHORE: Punjab Governor Salman Taseer has decided to summon the provincial assembly session on March 16. Official sources have said the speaker Rana Mohammad Iqbal had called the PA session on March 18 unconstitutionally.The Punjab Assembly secretariat will issue a gazette notification to this effect after governor’s consultation with President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani today.Sources also said the PA session summoned by the governor would likely elect new leader of the house. Motion of no confidence is likely to be moved against the speaker and deputy speaker in the session.

Police net lawyers, political leaders to thwart long march

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad and Rawalpindi police launched raids to round up lawyers’ leaders and key political figures Wednesday in a bid to thwart the long march.Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) Chairman Raja Zafar-ul-Haq was put under house arrest while 35 workers, including lawyers, had been detained so far.The Rawalpindi police raided the houses of several PML-N leaders, including Hanif Abbasi, Malik Abrar, Ziaullah Shah, Shahryar Riaz, Sardar Nasim, Anjum Aqeel and Rawalpindi District Bar Taufiq Asif. However, nobody was arrested. N-league’s Rawalpindi Secretariat was also raided by the police.Besides, city administration has started to provide containers to seal major roads.

Arrests made as last option: Sherry

ISLAMABAD: Information and Broadcasting Minister Sherry Rehman on Wednesday said that the government had no other option except to go for arrests.Addressing a news conference here, she said that Pakistan People Party (PPP) made several attempts to hold talks under charter of democracy (CoD) but received no response from the other side.“It was not correct to declare war if issues could be resolved through dialogue,” she said, adding that the government could not see the bloodshed of its own people on the roads.She further said: “N-league has repeatedly given a civil disobedience call that is against the democratic process.” PPP already tried to stage peaceful protest, she added.The minister said that differences remain among political parties all over the world but rebellion call is never given.She further said we didn’t come into power through backdoor as our leader Benazir Bhutto sacrificed her life for the cause.”
