‘Girls in showbiz do not remain housewives for long’

LAHORE: Shafqat Begum, mother of film star Meera, has said her daughter’s purported husband Attiqur Rehman should know that girls affiliated with show business do not remain housewives for long.She said this to Defence Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sarfraz Virk on Monday. Not married: However, Meera’s mother also denied that her daughter married Attique on September 2, 2007. She said her daughter was unmarried, and she would herself arrange Meera’s marriage.Virk told Daily Times that Meera’s mother appeared on the actress’s behalf, while Attique appeared in person to record their statements for initial investigation on their applications moved against each other. He said the police was investigating the possession of the house that Attique claims he gifted to the actress. He said the police was also probing whether the household items had been removed from the house as claimed by Attique. Afghanistan Commander's Report Submitted, But Secret

TEXAS: The U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal, has delivered his eagerly-awaited assessment to his bosses in Washington and Brussels, but the document is being kept secret. Pentagon officials say it will be followed by international consultations and possibly requests for more U.S. and international forces. According to a NATO release, General McChrystal writes that "the situation in Afghanistan is serious, but success is achievable." The general is quoted as saying success will require "a revised implementation strategy," as well as commitment, resolve, and increased unity of effort. French Spiderman scales Malaysia tower

Tuesday, September 01, 2009 KUALA LUMPUR: A French climber dubbed "Spiderman" for his ropeless ascents of some of the world's highest skyscrapers scaled a Malaysian tower he had tried to ascend twice before, and was then arrested.Alain Robert, 47, used the cover of pre-dawn darkness to avoid detection from security guards at the 88-storey Petronas Twin Towers, and reached the top floor in around an hour and 45 minutes."I did try twice to climb, and climbing to the top is one of my dreams. It's a bit like a love story, not only about climbing the tallest building to make it official but about completing something unfinished," Robert told foreign news agency ahead of the climb.

Dangerous hurricane heads for Mexico resort

Tuesday, September 01, 2009 LOS CABOS: Hurricane Jimena grew into a highly dangerous storm as it raced toward Mexico's Baja California peninsula on Monday, scaring tourists, prompting residents to sandbag homes and disrupting a top-level finance conference. Jimena's winds strengthened to nearly 155 mph (250 kph), almost reaching the threshold of a deadly Category 5 storm, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. Category 5 hurricanes are the top of the Saffir-Simpson intensity scale and can be devastating if they hit land. Caterina Acevedo in Los Cabos, a lively resort area at the tip of the peninsula. "This one is really scary but when I tried to leave there were no seats on the planes," she added. Much of Baja California is sparsely populated desert and mountains that are popular with nature lovers, surfers, sport fishermen and retirees. Los Cabos, which is more built up,attracts tourists to its golf courses, resorts and beaches.

Saudi tightens security to protect oil plants

Monday, August 31, 2009 KHOBAR: Saudi Arabia has tightened security at oil facilities after the country's anti-terror chief, Deputy Interior Minister Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, escaped a suicide attack, guards at Abqaiq, the world's biggest oil processing plant, said yesterday."Thursday night we received a call to tighten security and car inspection at all gates," one guard said. "Even Aramco employees undergo inspection. There's a lack of trust as militants disguised in Aramco's cars attacked the facility in 2006," he said.Interior Minister Prince Nayef yesterday defended the policy of enticing "repentant" militants after one tried to assassinate his son, but warned there could be more attacks ahead.
