Greece votes with govt on its heels over economy

Sunday, October 04, 2009 ATHENS: Greeks voted in a snap election Sunday with the opposition socialists expected to top Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis' party, which has been hit by corruption scandals and a badly slumping economy. Led by former foreign minister George Papandreou, son of late prime minister Andreas Papandreou, the socialist PASOK party held a lead of 5-7 points over the ruling conservatives in the final opinion polls published two weeks ago. Karamanlis called the election halfway through his four-year term with his New Democracy party, distracted by corruption scandals, finding it difficult to govern as the country faces a dire economic crisis. Buoyed for years by growth rates of around four percent partly attributed to EU funds, Greece is now on the brink of recession with output growth at near zero. Greece's public debt, one of the highest in the eurozone, is set to exceed 100 percent of GDP this year, and the European Union placed the country under supervis

Sunday, October 04, 2009 TEHRAN: Mohammed El-Baradei, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, arrived in Tehran last night for discussions on Sunday with Ali Akbar Salehi, head of the Iranian Atomic Energy Organisation and other officials. His visit comes as pressure mounts on Iran again following a warning from President Barack Obama that his patience is limited. The US president has demanded swift action from the Iranian regime. Indonesian disaster leaves whole villages buried

Sunday, October 04, 2009 PADANG: Whole villages in Indonesia's quake zone were found obliterated by landslides Saturday, as rescuers searched desperately for up to 4,000 people believed to be still trapped in rubble. The full extent of the damage from Wednesday's 7.6-magnitude earthquake emerged as attention turned to the hundreds of villages in the hills outside Padang, a devastated city of one million at the centre of rescue efforts. Journalists travelling from the coastal city on Sumatra island to the surrounding mountains encountered dozens of crumbled houses on the steep roads, and then four villages buried entirely by landslides. Search and rescue officers from the local government said that up to 400 people could have perished in the four hillside villages alone, including a wedding party of 30. "The difficulty in this rescue operation is that the houses are buried under the soil as much as four metres (13 feet) deep," the officer named Topan told media. "

Aging in muscles likely to be reversed?

Saturday, October 03, 2009 NEW YORK: Researchers have discovered a way of boosting the muscle regeneration process in old age back to the levels of the young. They found that an enzyme that acts as a catalyst to repair and maintenance of muscles is much lower in older people than the young. By increasing its concentration in the elderly, they believe they can restore “youthful vigour” to old muscles. Scientists hope the breakthrough could lead to new treatments that rejuvenate and strengthen ageing bodies or combat degenerative diseases. It is well known that as people get older, their ability to restore and rebuild lost muscle is weakened. Researchers at the University of California, working with colleagues from the Institute of Sports Medicine and Centre of Healthy Ageing at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, compared muscle tissue samples from around 30 healthy men. Half the volunteers were young 21 to 24-year-olds and half aged between 68 and 74. At the start of the study, s

New online map draws on population

Saturday, October 03, 2009 LONDON: A new world atlas which concentrates on population rather than land mass has been published.Researchers from the University of Sheffield created the online atlas of 200 maps that have been redrawn to show, at a glance, which cities are the largest, how all urban areas compare, and whether many or few people live in the countryside. The images, which were created as part of a Leverhulme Trust project to remap the world and extend the Worldmapper project, have been created using population distribution data so viewers can understand how many people make up each nation. The new world guides break with the 500-year tradition of conventional cartography which shows compass directions as straight lines.Benjamin Hennig, a postgraduate researcher at the University's Department of Geography, was part of the team that created the maps by using the gridded population of the world database of the Global Rural-Urban Mapping Project.Mr Hennig said the new projec
