12 police officers found dead in Mexico

Wednesday, July 15, 2009 MEXICO CITY: The bodies of 12 people found along a road in the Mexican state of Michoacan were federal police undertaking investigative work, said on Tuesday spokesman for Mexico's public security ministry. The bodies of 11 men and one woman were founded stacked together, and bore signs of having been tortured, said police spokesman Monte Alejandro Rubido. Officials have attributed the killings to the powerful "La Familia" drug cartel that operates in the region and is considered one of the most violent criminal gangs in Mexico. Last weekend, "La Familia" launched a series of attacks against police posts in Michoacan that left four people dead, including three members of the security forces and one suspected cartel hit man. The attacks were "desperate and violent reactions" to the government's crackdown against the cartels, President Felipe Calderon said on Monday. Authorities said the cartel attacks came in retaliation fo

New patch gives migraine sufferers hope

Tuesday, July 14, 2009 NEW YORK: A skin patch could help migraine sufferers avoid potential side-effects - as well as providing greater pain relief. The patch contains sumatriptan, a drug which is currently used in pill form to treat the problem. Now an American company has developed a patch that is as potent as oral medication but avoids the potential gastro-intestinal side-effects, such as nausea and vomiting. A patch can also provide a constant and steady supply of medicine into the bloodstream, which might offer better relief. Migraine affects an estimated 10 per cent of the UK population - mostly women - and results in around 18 million lost working days every year. Trials of the new patch are ongoing and the migraine patch is likely to be available in the next year or so.

Helicopter crash kills six in Afghanistan

Tuesday, July 14, 2009 KANDAHAR: A helicopter carrying civilian contractors working for foreign troops in Afghanistan crashed on Tuesday in the south of the country killing at least six people on board, NATO said. It was not immediately clear why the helicopter came down in the Sangin district of Helmand province, where US Marines, British and Afghan forces are pressing assaults against Taliban strongholds in the run-up to key elections. "At around 9:00 am (0430 GMT) this morning, a private helicopter has crashed outside Sangin military base.We have at least six people killed," said a spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). Pakistan Lost Series Against Sri Lanka

A match in which fortunes swung wildly finally ended in an emphatic seven-wicket win for Sri Lanka, as they sealed their first home series win against Pakistan with a convincing performance at the P Sara Oval. Pakistan were left to rue another batting collapse of monumental proportions, one in which they lost nine wickets for 35 to go from a commanding 285 for 1 to 320 all out. That left Sri Lanka with a target of just 171, which they knocked off in a mere 32 overs to ensure a three-day result. That had seemed a remote possibility when play started this morning, and seemed even less likely when Fawad Alam and Younis Khan were motoring along during their 200-run second-wicket partnership in the morning. Pakistan had wiped off the 150-run deficit with aplomb, and were building a substantial lead of their own; the pitch was flat, offering little assistance for pace or spin, and the Sri Lankans appeared completely deflated. Sri Lanka got a very small glimmer when Younis gifted his wicket

Bangladesh’s second Test victory

Tuesday, July 14, 2009 KINGSTOWN: Mahmudullah completed a memorable debut Test, when he cruelly exposed West Indies' frailty to spin, and bowled Bangladesh to a historic 95-run victory in the opening Test here on Monday.
