Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics — Day 3 review

After Jennifer Heil was expected to win Canada’s first Olympic gold on home soil in the ladies’ moguls on Sunday, it turned out to be the men’s moguls which produced the elusive medal, after a thrilling final saw Alexandre Bilodeau claim top spot on the podium. With the penultimate run, Bilodeau was looking to overtake defending champion Dale Begg-Smith for the lead. The pair received almost identical scores from the turns and air judges, but the Canadian tore down the course in 23.17 seconds, to Smith’s 23.72, which was enough to put him into the lead by 0.17 points. Bilodeau and the partisan crowd had to hold their breath whilst the final runner, Guilbaut Colas completed the field. The Frenchman completed the course in the quickest time, but a poor second jump sealed his fate. He could finish no better than sixth, a whole point behind Bilodeau, amidst wild celebrations when his score appeared on the scoreboard. 5 jailed for 17 years over Australia terror plot

Monday, February 15, 2010 SYDNEY: Five Muslim men were handed minimum jail terms of between 17 and 21 years on Monday for plotting violent jihadist attacks to protest against Australia's involvement in wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. New South Wales Supreme Court judge Anthony Whealy handed down the sentences at a purpose-built courthouse in the city's west. The men cannot be named for legal reasons.

7 die in Illinois apartment fire near Chicago

Monday, February 15, 2010 CICERO: Authorities say seven people are dead and others were missing after an early morning blaze swept through an apartment building near Chicago. Authorities say the fire started at about 6:30 a.m. Sunday at a residential apartment building in Cicero, about 10 miles southwest of Chicago. The fire was extinguished. Its cause was unknown. Town spokesman Ray Hanania said a passer-by spotted the blaze.It wasn't immediately known how many people were in the building when the fire started. Authorities have not identified the victims. Nearly two-dozen residents were relocated to a municipal office.

Kingdom demands rebels hand over 5 Saudi captives

Monday, February 15, 2010 RIYADH: Prince Khaled bin Sultan, assistant minister of defense and aviation for military affairs, urged Yemeni intruders on Saturday to hand over Saudi captives within 48 hours. “There are five captives. They have to return them and they have been given a time limit of 48 hours and I don’t want to elaborate more on this matter,” the minister said. Speaking to reporters after opening a military spare parts exhibition in Riyadh, Prince Khaled called on Sanaa to deploy its armed forces along the country’s northern border to prevent Yemenis from infiltrating into the Kingdom. He said the Kingdom would continue to deploy its forces along its southern border with Yemen to protect the country from intruders. Light plane crashes in Germany

Monday, February 15, 2010 BERLIN: A light aircraft crashed in the eastern German state of Saxony late Sunday with at least two pilots on board, a police spokesman told media. He was unable to say how many people had died in the crash of a Cessna Citation 550 near the Czech border. The business plane can normally carry up to eight people, according to a German air safety agency spokesman, who said the Cessna had taken off from Prague in the Czech Republic heading for Karlstadt in western Sweden. Radio contact was broken off at 8:20 pm (1920 GMT) when the plane was 36 kilometres (23 miles) southeast of Dresden.
