Film star Syed Kamal passes away

KARACHI—Popular Pakistani film star and TV artist Syed Kamal passed away here on Thursday after lingering illness in the hospital. He was 75. Kamal was admitted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital with a heart stroke on Wednesday, but he could not survive and passed away on Thursday morning. Kamal, who has a striking resemblance with the legendary Indian film star Raj Kapoor, received an international fame after performing leading roles in all-time hit films like Toba and Ashyana. The film hero of 60s and 70s also worked in many TV dramas and serials at small and received public appraisal for his talent at the TV screen. His most notable TV appearance is in hit TV drama Kashkol in which he played a wealthy businessman whose son (played by his real life son, Ghalib Kamal) becomes addicted to heroin. US urges Pakistan, India, Afghanistan to work together

WASHINGTON: Stressing linkages between Pakistan, India and Afghanistan with regard to durable peace and stability in South Asia, the United States on Wednesday said it encourages dialogue between Islamabad and New Delhi for developing a stable bilateral relationship. Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs Philip J Crowley said the U.S. is focused on the region and “understands clearly the importance of Afghanistan, the importance of Pakistan, the importance of India, and the interaction among those countries.” He said the U.S. wants all these countries to work “constructively together.” “This is kind of an inseparable you can’t look at peace and stability in South Asia without understanding the vitally important role played by all of these three countries and, obviously, the surrounding republics in Central Asia as well,” he said in response to a question at the daily State Department briefing. Infant dies of swine flu in Kuwait

Updated at: 0724 PST, Thursday, October 01, 2009 KUWAIT: A nine-month-old Kuwaiti baby boy suffering from heart infection and developmental delays died yesterday after being infected with the swine flu virus, bringing Kuwait's total death toll from the disease to eight, the Ministry of Health announced. The baby, who was taken to a number of hospitals for treatment, was admitted to the hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on Tuesday in a critical condition, but despite being given the necessary antiviral drugs, his immune system proved too weak to fight the disease.

Sharapova reaches quarters at Pan Pacific Open

Thursday, October 01, 2009 TOKYO: Maria Sharapova recovered from a slow start Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over compatriot Alisa Kleybanova.The former top-ranked Russian, who has been struggling since returning from a 10-month injury layoff, will face Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Benesova defeated Taiwan's Chang Kai-chan 7-5, 6-2.Sharapova, 25th in the world rankings, took control of the match in the second set when she broke Kleybanova three times to open up a 5-0 lead.
