Thursday, July 02, 2009 LOS ANGELES: Funeral plans for Michael Jackson remained clouded in uncertainty Wednesday, with a burial at the pop icon's Neverland Ranch reportedly ruled out as the singer's will emerged for the first time. The Los Angeles Times reported that the Jackson family's hopes of burying the music legend at his sprawling fantasy estate had been dashed because local officials in Santa Barbara County were unable to circumvent local regulations. Earlier reports had indicated Jackson's body would be placed on public display at Neverland on Friday before a private service for his family at the Ranch on Sunday.A stampede of international media and fans rushed to the sleepy town of Los Olivos near Neverland following the reports, with hotels across the surrounding area selling out within hours.

Local media reports said a memorial service at a large-capacity venue such as the city's Staples Center or Coliseum was now being considered, with Jackson possibly buried at a city cemetery. The fresh doubts over Jackson's funeral arrangements came as the picture surrounding the star's estate appeared to clear with the emergence of a 2002 will filed at Los Angeles Superior Court.

Snake bite deaths

Monday, July 06, 2009 COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan government recorded some 33,000 snake bites in 2008, with most of the victims coming from remote villages.The Department of Government Information said in a statement that most of the snake bite cases could be fatal if neglected.The statement said snake bites are often neglected in Sri Lanka as victims do not seek treatment at hospitals where advanced medication is available. Instead, the victims rush to traditional type of treatment which could be a risk, reports Xinhua.Snake bites death at domestic level, outside hospitals, go unrecorded, said the statement.Most victims of snake bite are from the rural and remote villages where there is no electricity after dusk.Statistics show that Sri Lanka has over 90 species of snake with around 10 species possessing venom capable of killing a human being.In Sri Lanka the annual death rate due to snake bite envenoming is one of the highest in the world being 6 in 100,000 population.
