88 die in Russian passenger plane crash


Sunday, September 14, 2008 MOSCOW: An Aeroflot Boeing-737 jet crashed near Ural Mountains city Perm killing all 88 passengers including the 6 crews on board.
Russian Airline Boeing-737 was on way to its destination taking off from the Moscow airport and crashed near the city Perm in the Mountains of Ural, the plane was flying at a height of 1800 meter, while about to land lost contact with the control. Russian Radio said that none among the passengers and the crew was left alive, while the relief teams have left for the scene of incident.

100 injured as fire erupts in Bangladesh textile mill

Sunday, September 14, 2008 DHAKA: A fire broke out in a textile mill in Ghazipur in Bangladesh, injuring at least 100 people.

According to Mill administration, the fire erupted at 10:30pm at night after running machine. However, laborers working in the mills managed to control the fire after switching off the power supply.The fire caused damage worth 50, 000 Taka.

Topalov beats Norwegian prodigy in Grand Slam Chess final

Sunday, September 14, 2008 MADRID: Bulgaria's Veselin Topalov on Saturday won the Grand Slam Chess Final Masters in Spain, beating 17-year-old Norwegian prodigy Magnus Carlsen who had hoped to become the youngest ever world number one.
With four wins, five draws and one loss, Topalov collected 17 points and took home the 150,000-euro (210,000-dollar) first prize.
Carlsen had three wins, four draws and three losses to score 13 points, the same as Armenia's Levon Aronian.
India's Viswanathan Anand, who had eight draws and two losses to finish last at the tournament in the northern city of Bilbao and ceded his number one ranking to Topalov, according to an unofficial chess listing. Anand is now in fifth.

Cyprus lace to be declared UNESCO cultural heritage

Tuesday, September 08, 2009 NICOSIA: Traditional hand-made lace produced in the Larnaca district village of Lefkara in Cyprus known as lefkaritiko includeded in UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). Soseilos said that the relevant UNESCO committee has already decided to include lefkaritiko in its list of the world’s ICH, a more recent addition to UNESCO’s long-standing list of World Heritage sites, and the decision will be formally announced at the UNESCO General Assembly next month. The tradition of needlework and lace embroidery in Lefkara goes back centuries.
