Tuesday, February 16, 2010 PORT-AU-PRINCE: A mudslide in northern Haiti on Monday caused the partial collapse of a school, killing four children and injuring two others, a Haitian civil protection official said. "The accident was caused by four days of rain that caused a mudslide," said the official on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to give out the information. He said the primary school in Cap-Haitien partially collapsed, leaving "four dead and two injured." All were children, he said, adding the incident occurred in the early afternoon. Firefighters and UN rescue workers called off a search at the school after determining there was no one else inside, the official said. The accident brought further catastrophe to a country already struggling to recover from last month's massive earthquake that killed more than 200,000 people. Tuesday, February 16, 2010 HALLE: At least 18 people were killed and almost a hundred injured when two rush-hour commuter trains smashed into each other outside Brussels Monday, rail officials said. An investigation was launched into the cause of the crash, which happened at the height of the morning rush, with suspicions of driver error as well as a lack of safety equipment on one of the trains. In a joint statement Infrabel, which runs the Belgian rail network, and SNCB, which runs the trains, said the death toll stood at 18 with 95 injured. Eleven of the injured were said to be in serious condition. Emergency workers suspended after nightfall a search for more bodies in the mangled wreckage of the carriages. "We don't think there are any more victims in the trains," said crisis centre official Anja De Wolf. "But there could still be more bodies trapped under the carriages," she said. After Jennifer Heil was expected to win Canada’s first Olympic gold on home soil in the ladies’ moguls on Sunday, it turned out to be the men’s moguls which produced the elusive medal, after a thrilling final saw Alexandre Bilodeau claim top spot on the podium. With the penultimate run, Bilodeau was looking to overtake defending champion Dale Begg-Smith for the lead. The pair received almost identical scores from the turns and air judges, but the Canadian tore down the course in 23.17 seconds, to Smith’s 23.72, which was enough to put him into the lead by 0.17 points. Bilodeau and the partisan crowd had to hold their breath whilst the final runner, Guilbaut Colas completed the field. Monday, February 15, 2010 SYDNEY: Five Muslim men were handed minimum jail terms of between 17 and 21 years on Monday for plotting violent jihadist attacks to protest against Australia's involvement in wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. New South Wales Supreme Court judge Anthony Whealy handed down the sentences at a purpose-built courthouse in the city's west. The men cannot be named for legal reasons.

Monday, February 15, 2010 CICERO: Authorities say seven people are dead and others were missing after an early morning blaze swept through an apartment building near Chicago. Authorities say the fire started at about 6:30 a.m. Sunday at a residential apartment building in Cicero, about 10 miles southwest of Chicago. The fire was extinguished. Its cause was unknown. Town spokesman Ray Hanania said a passer-by spotted the blaze.It wasn't immediately known how many people were in the building when the fire started. Authorities have not identified the victims. Nearly two-dozen residents were relocated to a municipal office.
