Khalid Shaikh says ‘I lied about link with al-Qaeda after abuse’

Tuesday, June 16, 2009, WASHINGTON: Alleged mastermind of 9/11 attacks Khalid Shaikh Mohammed told U.S. military officials that he had lied to the CIA after being abused, according to documents made public Monday. Mohammed made the assertion during hearings at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where he was transferred in 2006 after being held at secret CIA sites since his capture in 2003."I make up stories," Mohammed said, describing in broken English an interrogation probably administered by the CIA concerning the whereabouts of Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. "Where is he? I don't know. Then, he torture me," Mohammed said of his interrogator. "Then I said, 'Yes, he is in this area.' "Mohammed also appeared to say that he had fingered people he did not know as being Al Qaeda members in order to avoid abusive treatment. Haneya says Hamas accepts a state on 1967 border

Tuesday, June 16, 2009 GAZA: Deposed Prime Minister of Hamas in Gaza Ismail Haneya told former U.S. President Jimmy Carter that Hamas accepts a Palestinian state established on the territories occupied by Israel in 1967. Haneya told a joint news conference after his meeting with Carter in Gaza that Hamas accepts the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the territories occupied in 1967 "with Jerusalem as its capital." Carter, meanwhile, told reporters that the principle of solving the conflict based on the two-state solution and sharing Jerusalem as a joint capital for the two states is the best for achieving a comprehensive and everlasting peace. Haneya said, "If there is a real project that aims at resolving the Palestinian cause on establishing a Palestinian state on 1967 borders, under full Palestinian sovereignty, we will support it." "We are pushing towards the dream of having our independent state with Jerusalem as its capital," Hane...

Ahmadinejad says the age of empires has ended

Tuesday, June 16, 2009 YEKATERINBURG: Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Tuesday said the age of empires had ended and the capitalist system has started to crumble."The international capitalist order is retreating," the controversial president told world leaders, including Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and China's Hu Jintao, in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg."It is absolutely obvious that the age of empires has ended and its revival will not take place."A broadly-smiling Ahmadinejad, wearing a dark suit and as usual no tie, earlier shook hands with a beaming Medvedev before the leaders went into the second day of the summit.Whether Ahmadinejad -- who has a habit of stealing the limelight at such events -- would turn up had become a source of intrigue after he postponed his planned arrival on Monday following unrest in Iran. Ahmadinejad later held a bilateral meeting with Medvedev, the Kremlin said."Iraq is still occupied. There is no order in ...

Defeated candidate Mirhossein Mousavi has appealed to the council for the election to be annulled, but has said he was not optimistic about its verdict.

Seven killed as anti-Ahmadinejad protests turn violent

Tuesday, June 16, 2009 TEHRAN: Seven people were killed when violence erupted during a massive opposition rally in the heart of Tehran against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's disputed re-election, state radio said on Tuesday. State radio said at least seven people were killed when "thugs" attacked and vandalised government buildings at the end of the rally, which had been banned by the authorities as an illegal gathering. "A military post was attacked with the intention of looting its weapons. Unfortunately, seven of our citizens were killed and a number of them injured," it said. One source said the emergency services department had information that eight people were killed, while the coroner's office said it had registered no deaths in connection wit...

9 foreign hostages killed in Yemen

Tuesday, June 16, 2009 SANA’A: Nine missing foreigners – including three children – in Yemen have all turned up dead, said a Yemeni official Monday, apparently executed by their kidnappers. The nine foreigners, including seven German nationals, a Briton and a South Korean, disappeared last week while on a picnic in the restive northern Saada region of Yemen. The bodies were found by the son of a tribal leader in Noshour, east of the volatile Saada mountainous area of northern Yemen where the nine were abducted, the official said. The authorities had accused Shiite Zaidi rebels in Saada of seizing seven Germans, a British engineer and a South Korean woman teacher. Obama puzzled by Iran violence

Tuesday, June 16, 2009 WASHINGTON: The election victory of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is likely to complicate US President Barack Obama’s new approach to his country’s conflict with Iran. The reason behind the foreseen obstacle is neither the US nor Iran’s refusal to engage in future dialogue, but rather, Israel’s insistence on a hard-line approach to the problem. Iran’s presidential elections on June 12 were positioned to represent another fight between Middle Eastern ‘moderates’ and ‘extremists’. That depiction, which conveniently divided the Middle East, according to the prevailing US foreign policy discourse, to pro-American and anti-American camps was hardly as clear in the Iranian case as it was in Palestine and most recently in Lebanon.Ahmadinejad’s main rival, Mir Hussein Mousavi served as Iran’s Prime Minister for eight years (between 1981-1989) during one of Iran’s most challenging times — its war with Iraq. He was hardly seen as a ‘moderate’ then. More, Mousavi wa...

Some bright hitting from Deepika Rasangika late on, with a 20-ball unbeaten 24, pushed her team forward but the total still looked light. An impressive fielding effort, however, gave it a chance.Earlier, New Zealand rode into the semi-finals unbeaten after recording its third successive win, ...
