Green vegetables may protect heart

Sunday, September 06, 2009 LONDON: Researchers have discovered a possible reason why green vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower are good for the heart. Their work suggests a chemical found in the vegetables can boost a natural defence mechanism to protect arteries from disease. The Imperial College London team hope their work could lead to new dietary treatments to prevent heart problems. Much heart disease is caused by the build up of fatty plaques in the arteries known as atherosclerosis. However, arteries do not get clogged up with these plaques in a uniform way. Bends and branches of blood vessels - where blood flow is disrupted and can be sluggish - are much more prone to the build-up. The latest study has shown that a protein that usually protects against plaque build up called Nrf2 is inactive in areas of arteries that are prone to disease. However, it also found that treatment with a chemical found in green "brassica" vegetables such as broccoli could ...

'Telepathic' microchip could help paraplegics control computers

Sunday, September 06, 2009 LONDON: A 'telepathic' microchip that enables paraplegics to control computers has been developed by Dr Jon Spratley, a British scientist. Dr Jon Spratley says his device could motor neuron sufferers such as Stephen Hawking, operate PCs and television by thought alone. The chip is implanted onto the surface of the brain, where it monitors electronic 'thought' pulses. While paraplegics may be unable to move their limbs, their brains still produce an electronic signal when they try. It means paraplegics, amputees or those with motor neurone disease, such as Stephen Hawking, could be able to operate light switches, PCs and even cars by the power of thought alone. The device picks up neural signals from the brain's motor cortex, and captures the moment a paralysed patient tries to move their limbs. This impulse is then transmitted to a relay station implanted in the skull, which in turn sends the signal to a receiver housed in simple computers...

Brisk walking cuts breast cancer risk in women

Sunday, September 06, 2009 WASHINGTON: “Brisk walking - about 3.0 mph on a treadmill - for three to five hours per week, or about 30 minutes a day, can net big benefits for breast cancer survivors,” said Dr. Carolyn Kaelin, a Harvard surgeon, breast cancer survivor and author of The Breast Cancer Survivor’s Fitness Plan. During the study, the researchers examined nearly 3,000 women up to 14 years after their breast cancer diagnosis and found that cardiovascular and aerobic physical activities reduced the likelihood of breast cancer recurrence. It also subsequently increased the odds of living longer.

Sunday, September 06, 2009 OHRID: An ageing tourist boat sank suddenly in Macedonia's popular Lake Ohrid on Saturday, killing 15 people, mostly Bulgarians, as survivors clung to wooden planks and buoys, officials said. The Iliden was 200 metres (220 yards) from shore when it apparently capsized into the deepest lake in the region -- famous for its turquoise waters -- at around 11:00 am (0900 GMT) near a campground outside Ohrid city.
