Mumbai attacks defence lawyer shot dead

Friday, February 12, 2010 MUMBAI: The lawyer defending Faheem Ansari, one of the three arrested in connection with the 26/11 attack, was killed, nine days before the special court sets a date for the start of the final arguments. Unidentified men fired four rounds at Shahid Azmi from close range at his office in Kurla’s Taximen’s Colony, central Mumbai, around 7.40pm, police said, adding the assailants escaped in the darkness. The spot is behind the upscale Bandra-Kurla Complex, which houses the headquarters of several banks and business houses. Azmi, in his mid 30s, was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital in nearby Ghatkopar, but was declared dead on arrival. “We are verifying if there were three or four assailants. Azmi had received threats from don Ravi Pujari a few years ago but I am not aware of any recent threats,” said deputy commissioner of police Milind Bharambe. One Mumbai attacker could be Indian: Chidambaram

Thursday, February 04, 2010 NEW DELHI: For the first time Indian government has admitted that at least one of the 26/11 attackers could be Indian. Indian Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, speaking exclusively to an Indian channel claimed that there could have been an Indian hand in the Mumbai terror attacks. The Home Minister said that voice samples of the suspect from Pakistan were essential to conclusively establish the identity of Abu Jindal, who is suspected to the Indian handler. Chidambaram said goes by the name Abu Jindal. That's something we have known for many, many months now, he goes by the name Abu Jindal, but he is not Abu Jindal, that is not his real name. Court dismisses Kasab's lawyer Kazmi

Tuesday, December 01, 2009 MUMBAI: The special trial court hearing the 26/11 terror attack case in Mumbai has sacked Abbas Kazmi, the lawyer of Ajmal Kasab, the only captured terrorist of 26/11, for "non-cooperation."Special sessions judge M L Tahiliyani has sacked Kazmi on charges of non co-operation. A new advocate, KP Pawar, also Kazmis junior has been appointed as the new lawyer in the case.Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said Kazmi was removed as he neither withdrew from the case nor cooperate with the court.“The court had ultimately asked him whether he would like to withdraw from the case or whether he would cooperate with the court or the court should take further action. Thursday, November 26, 2009 INDIA: On November 26 a year ago, 10 terrorists laid siege to India's financial capital Mumbai killing more than 166 people and injuring over 300. One year on, survivors and the families of those killed are still picking up the pieces of their lives. A Pakistani anti-Terrorism Court No I (ATC-I) on Wednesday indicted seven suspects on terror charges in connection with last year’s Mumbai attacks.Judge Malik Muhammad Akram Awan adjourned the hearing until December 5. The seven suspects are Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, Abdul Wajid, Mazhar Iqbal, Shahid Jamil Riaz, Hammad Amin Sadiq, Jamil Ahmed and Younus Anjum.They have been accused of abetting their co-accused in terrorist acts in Mumbai on November 26 to 28, 2008, and causing the death of more than 170 people in addition to destruction of property.Meanwhile, US and India have welcomed a Pakistani court's decision to charge seven suspects in connection with last November's Mumbai attacks.Those indicted ...
