Eight shot dead in Mexico

Monday, August 31, 2009 MEXICO CITY: A gang of armed commandos gunned down five adults and three children in the northern Mexican state of Sinaloa, authorities said. Gunmen packing assault rifles opened fire on the group in an outdoor meeting place popular with young people in the city of Navolato, Sinaloa state, a state prosecutor's spokesman told foreign news agency. There was no immediate motive for the grisly attack late Saturday, the spokesman said.The dead include an underage girl, two boys, a young woman and four young men, who were just before midnight when gunmen arrived in pickups, jumped out and executed them in a hail of gunfire, the spokesman said.

At least 200 sea lions found dead on Chilean coast

Monday, August 24, 2009 SANTIAGO: At least 200 sea lions have been found dead along Chile's northern coast.Local television stations Channels are showing images of the dead and dying mammals on the rocks and in the sea near Iquique.Chile's fishing service says many of the dead apparently are young sea lions abandoned when their mothers were drawn too far offshore hunting food. It says the El Nino phenomenon has made prey scarce near shore.Environmental groups said Saturday they suspect a local molybdenum plant or other industry may be to blame.News media in neighboring Peru reported earlier this month that more than 20 sea lions had been found dead in the Chimbote region there.

India's swine flu death rate is increasing

Friday, August 14, 2009 MUMBAI: A 26-year-old woman died Thursday of H1N1 swine flu in the southern city of Bangalore, raising India's death toll from the virus to 20, authorities said.The death was the first reported in India's information technology capital, the Press Trust of India reported.Meanwhile in Pune, the worst-affected in India, two more victims of the virus died Thursday, raising the death toll in that western city near Mumbai to 12, the report said. The victims were an 11-month-old boy and a 75-year-old old woman.US media reported movie halls, schools and colleges were ordered closed Thursday for three days to a week in Mumbai, the commercial and financial capital of the country, as fear of the pandemic spread.Prajakata Lavangare, a spokeswoman for the government of Maharashtra state of which Mumbai is the capital, said similar orders were issued in Pune, which is also located in the state.The woman who died in Bangalore was identified only as Roopa, a teacher in...

Pune man dies raising India Swine toll to 19

Thursday, August 13, 2009 PUNE: With 75-year-old person dying of H1N1 at Sassoon Hospital here today, death toll has risen to 19 in the country. So far, 12 people have died of swine flu in Pune only. A 10-month-old boy from Pune succumbed to H1N1 late Wednesday night. The child tested positive for the swine flu and was admitted to Sasoon Hospital where his condition deteriorated. Thereafter, he was shifted to Sahyadri hospital where he succumbed to the virus.So far H1N1 has claimed 19 lives, including 12 in Pune, two each in Mumbai and Gujarat, one each in Nasik, Chennai, and Trivendrum, in India.The virus that travelled from abroad to India didn't show its affect in the beginning. But it started affecting people gradually and killed Pune school girl Reeda Sheikh on August 3.
