It's been a wonderful ride so far

It's a departure in every which way for this Bollywood actress on the ascendant. She is playing a deglamorised politician and the Hindi has to be perfect too, but Britain born Katrina Kaif says her role in Rajneeti excites her more because she is now comfortable with the language. Katrina, who has delivered a string of hits playing the urban hip young woman, gets a makeover in Prakash Jha's Rajneeti. Dressed in cotton saris and speaking chaste Hindi, this is a challenging role that she's looking forward to. But the Hindi is passe now for the actress, whose accented Hindi meant that her many early films had to be dubbed. "I am excited about the part (in Rajneeti), but I am not very excited about speaking Hindi because I spoke Hindi in my last 10 films. It's a great role and a great film and I certainly hope people enjoy it," Katrina told IANS over the phone from Dubai. Rajneeti is Katrina's first political thriller and she says she wants to keep her opti...

63 die, dozens injured in Indian temple stampede

Thursday, March 04, 2010 LUCKNOW: A stampede broke out at a Hindu temple in northern India Thursday as thousands of people jostled with each other to get free clothes and utensils, leaving at least 63 people dead and dozens more injured, officials said. The force of the stampede was so great, it knocked down a gate at the temple compound in Kunda, a small town 110 miles (180kilometers) southeast of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state. About 44 worshippers were injured in the crush of people at a Hindu temple belonging to a popular local religious leader, said Ashok Kumar, a senior government official. Thousands of farmers and villagers had gathered at the temple around noon to receive free goods to mark the anniversary of the death of the wife of the religious leader, Kripalu Maharaj, said Brij Lal, a local police official. By late afternoon police had cleared the compound and started the process of identifying the bodies, Kumar said. Hundreds of people gathered at a nea...

Early voting begins in Iraq general election

Thursday, March 04, 2010 BAGHDAD: Voting began on Thursday in Iraq's general election with security forces, the sick and prisoners casting their ballots ahead of polling day at the weekend. Election organisers expect around 800,000 people, who will not be able to go to polling stations on Sunday, to take part in the early voting session. Security was tight in the centre of the capital and security forces closed down streets around polling stations. Soldiers and policemen, hospital staff and the sick, and prisoners with less than five years left in jail are eligible to vote. The latter three groups are set to vote in their hospitals or prisons. "I cannot reveal his name, but he is secular," said Nidhal, a nurse at Baghdad's Abid al-Haitham hospital, when asked who she had voted for. Her finger bore an ink stain, indicating she had cast her ballot. "I hope deep down in my heart that he will win, because Iraq cannot be governed by Islamists and we need a...

Japan's hand-made electric cars

Thursday, March 04, 2010 TOYAMA: While auto manufacturing giants spend millions to develop environmentally-friendly electric cars, one Japanese company has taken a more low-key approach, crafting hand-made "green" cars. Takeoka Jidosha Kogei may be the antithesis of the world's Hondas and Nissans. The family-run business makes its cars from scratch in a garage workshop in the snowy foothills in the northwest of the country. There are no industrial robots or assembly lines in sight. Instead just a dozen mechanics crafting each model by hand, right up to the finishing touch of adding a set of beady headlights to their "Milieu" range. The cars seem to owe much of their design to Japan's manga cartoon tradition -- their one-seater T-10 seems barely large enough for an adult driver, with just enough extra room left for a small pet, as requested by customers. The box-shaped two-door car -- which is dubbed the "Eco-beagle" and comes in green, whi...

Strong aftershocks spark panic in Chile

Thursday, March 04, 2010 SANTIAGO: Strong aftershocks have struck Chile again, rocking the battered town of Concepcion and sending panicked residents fleeing. Soldiers deployed in the city urged people to evacuate following Wednesday's temblors and the authorities issued a tsunami warning. Media correspondent said there was pandemonium everywhere as people rushed to get to higher ground even though the city is quite far away from the sea, making the possibility of a tsunami very remote. No damage or injuries were recorded in the aftershocks that came as Michelle Bachelet, the outgoing president, called for calm and asked people to stop hoarding supplies and help with relief efforts. Speaking in the Chilean capital, Santiago, on Wednesday, she said: "We don't have shortage. There is enough food, so everyone has to remain calm in places where stores are closed. "We will replenish the stores. Banks are beginning to open ... that is to say we will return to re...

World Cup shirts to be made of old bottles

Thursday, March 04, 2010 LONDON: Many of the world's top soccer players, including Cristiano Ronaldo, will be wearing shirts made of old plastic bottles at the World Cup in South Africa. Nike said shirts for the nine national teams wearing its gear, including one of the favourites Brazil, would be made from polyester recycled from used bottles. Each shirt would use up to eight plastic bottles retrieved from Japanese and Taiwanese landfill sites, said Nike, the world's biggest sports goods manufacturer. All of the nine teams, who also include Portugal, Netherlands and the United States, will wear the shirts. Nike says they will keep players drier and cooler than previous kit while reducing energy consumption in manufacture by 30% compared to normal polyester. Thirty-two teams will be at the month-long finals starting on June 11. Manufacture of the shirts, which will also be sold to fans, used 13 million plastic bottles — enough to fill 29 football pitches — the US ...
