Sunday, September 13, 2009 LONDON: Anyone who thought Paris Hilton wouldn't be remembered 10 years from now shouldn't put a bet on it.Today, the celebrity socialite, heiress and reality TV star joined the ranks of Oscar Wilde and Stephen Hawking in the Oxford Dictionary Of Quotations.The Sun online reports the 28-year-old won a shock place with her advice: "Dress cute wherever you go, life is too short to blend in." The quotes are among 20,000 new entries in the updated edition of the dictionary out today.They include words from President Obama, scientist Stephen Hawking and late jazzman Humphrey Lyttelton.The compilers even managed to find a new quote from Chinese philosopher Confucius, who lived 2000 years ago.

U.S. decides to allow Afghan prisoners access to courts

Sunday, September 13, 2009 WASHIGTON: The Obama administration plans to issue new guidelines meant to provide prisoners at a U.S. detention center in Afghanistan greater latitude in challenging their detention, The New York Times reported in its Sunday edition.Citing Pentagon officials and advocates for detainees at the U.S.-run prison at Bagram Air Base, the newspaper said each of the approximately 600 detainees would be assigned a U.S. military official who would have the authority to look for evidence, including witnesses and classified material, for any detainee challenging his detention.A military-appointed review board would hear the challenges, the Times said. The new policies expected to be announced as early as this week, after congressional review, the paper reported, but it was unclear how quickly they could be implemented. Sunday, September 13, 2009 ALMATY: A fire at a specialized hospital facility for drug addicts in the southeastern Kazakh city of Taldykorgan killed 38 people on Sunday morning, the government said. The Emergency Ministry said in a statement that workers evacuated and rescued another 40 people. The cause of the fire was unknown.

US citizens in India issued travel alert

Sunday, September 13, 2009 WASHINGTON: The United States on Saturday said there is a possibility of terrorist attacks across India as the country enters into the festival season of Dusshera, Eid and Diwali this month. In a travel alert issued to its citizens travelling to India, the US State Department advised its nationals to be cautious and maintain a low profile during their travel to the country in this period. "The Department of State reminds US citizens of the continued possibility of terrorist attacks throughout India during the current Indian holiday season, which includes Hindu, Islamic and secular holidays as well as the period surrounding the commemoration of the September 11 terror attacks," it said. Sunday, September 13, 2009 SRINAGAR: A powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted in a car went off outside the Central Jail in Srinagar on Saturday evening, ripping apart a police bus carrying detenues back from the court leading to the death of five cops and a woman.In the first major explosion carried out by the terrorists this year, the IED bomb was planted in a car parked near the Central Jail, Srinagar. The quake occurred at about 3:47 p.m. local time (2006 GMT) approximately 20 miles (33 km) northeast of Puerto Cabello, Venezuela, at a depth of 20.5 miles (33 km).

Sunday, September 13, 2009 JERUSALEM: Israeli media reports that President Shimon Peres has fainted on stage while speaking at an event in Tel Aviv.The 86-year-old Peres passed out Saturday while answering questions from the crowd. He regained consciousness a few seconds later. According to media reports, Peres refused to be taken to hospital and is still at the venue.

Serena Williams berates official, loses match for conduct violation

Rain gave way to bedlam tonight at the U.S. Open. Defending champion Serena Williams was charged with a point penalty on match point after yelling at a line judge for a calling a foot fault on her previous serve. The ruling gave Kim Clijsters a 6-4, 7-5 victory in their semifinal match, which had been delayed 32 hours because of rain. After the line judge called the foot fault with Serena serving at 5-6, 15-30 in the second set, the youngest Williams sister intimidatingly stared her down before screaming at the official with a jabbed finger. After a few seconds, Serena turned back around to serve, thought better of it and resumed the badgering. The chair umpire then called over the line judge to ask what Serena had said, rules officials were summoned, a brief summit occurred at the net and it was determined that Serena would be assessed a point penalty for a conduct violation.
