Ex-wife confesses her role behind Kuwaiti fire tragedy

Tuesday, August 18, 2009 KUWAIT CITY: The disgruntled former wife of a Kuwaiti bridegroom has reportedly confessed to starting the fire which charred at least 43 women and children at a wedding tent. The woman, who is the ex-wife of the bridegroom, was arrested after some maids claimed that they saw her setting the tent on fire with some kerosene-soaked rags, Kuwaiti News channel reported on Monday. The 23-year-old suspect was reportedly taking revenge on her former husband for the ill-treatment he melted out to her during their marriage. Meanwhile, the bride escaped unhurt but her mother and sister were killed in the devastating blaze which also claimed the lives of 43 women and three children in just three minutes while injuring 90 others, the newspaper said. The fire broke out on Saturday in a tent reserved for women at a wedding ceremony in Jahra north of Kuwait City.

Kuwait emir urges Israel to act on peace

Tuesday, August 04, 2009 WASHINGTON: Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah told US President Barack Obama on Monday that Arab states will act on their peace initiative only once Israel "implements and fulfills its obligations." "I affirmed to President Obama that we are interested in bringing about peace in the Middle East. It is in our interest that peace be brought about," the emir said through a translator as he met with Obama at the White House. The visiting leader noted pan-Arab support for the initiative presented by Saudi Arabia in 2002 and stressed, "We will implement this peace initiative when Israel implements and fulfills its obligations." The Arab peace initiative offers Israel full normalization of ties in return for its withdrawal from occupied Arab land and the creation of a Palestinian state. Kuwait opens new center for pre-marriage medical check-up

Monday, August 03, 2009 KUWAIT: Kuwait has begun to oblige new couples to undergo pre-marriage medical check-up. The Ministry of Health opened a new center for pre-marriage medical check-up, receiving 45 couples on the first day of opening.The ministry plans to open new offices of the center in all other governorates in the country in order to facilitate the application of the new system, Minister of Health Hilal al-Sayer told reporters following the inauguration of the medical facility.The Kuwaiti move is chiefly intended to ensure healthy and safe marriages with a view to curbing genetic and contagious diseases, he said. Diseases involved in pre-marital medical examination include anemia, hepatitis, AIDS and syphilis, he added.
