Friends, family bid farewell to Michael Jackson

Wednesday, July 08, 2009, LOS ANGELES: The memorial service for the 'King of Pop' Michael Jackson has ended with an emotional goodbye from the star's only daughter. Paris Katherine Jackson, 11, fought tears as she told an audience of millions her father had been great since the day she was born."I just want to say, ever since the day I was born, Daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine. I just want to say I love him so much." Afterwards she burst into tears and was helped off the stage by her aunt Janet Jackson.Her brothers Prince Michael, 12, and Blanket, 7, were also on stage with their uncles and aunts but did not speak. The Staples Centre in Los Angeles erupted into song for renditions of Jackon's hit songs We Are The World and Heal The World. The stage, filled with Jackson's family and performers such as Lionel Richie, Usher, Smokey Robinson, Mariah Carey, sung the iconic songs along with the thousands of fans crammed into the stadium for the memorial service.Jackson's brother, Marlon Jackson said he would "treasure the good memories of his brother." "I hurt". "I stand here trying to find words of comfort, trying to understand why the world has taken our brother to return home after such a short visit here on earth.Ad Feedback "Michael when you left, a part of me went with you and a part of you will live forever within me." Marlon Jackson said people would never be able to understand what his brother had endured."Being judged, ridiculed, how much pain can one take? Maybe now Michael they will leave you alone. "I thank you Michael, I thank you for all the smiles you have placed in people's hearts." Marlon said his last request was for Jackson to give his late brother Brandon a hug for him.

Cuba's world-famous cigar festival closes in Havana

Sunday, February 28, 2010 HAVANA: Hundreds of wealthy merchants and cigar aficionados from all parts of the world gathered in Havana this week to bid high stakes for humidors full of premium cigars. Cuba's annual Habanos festival ended on Friday night with an auction of ornate humidors of cedar and mahogany stacked with hand-rolled stogies that raised 800,000 euros ($1.09 million dollars). Habanos S.A. executives this month said cigar sales fell 8 percent to $360 million in 2009, so they have created the Julieta, a smaller, milder version of the Romeo y Julieta cigar, aimed specifically at female smokers. Women now make up only 5 to 10 percent of customers for Habanos. Cyprus lace to be declared UNESCO cultural heritage

Tuesday, September 08, 2009 NICOSIA: Traditional hand-made lace produced in the Larnaca district village of Lefkara in Cyprus known as lefkaritiko includeded in UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). Soseilos said that the relevant UNESCO committee has already decided to include lefkaritiko in its list of the world’s ICH, a more recent addition to UNESCO’s long-standing list of World Heritage sites, and the decision will be formally announced at the UNESCO General Assembly next month. The tradition of needlework and lace embroidery in Lefkara goes back centuries.
