Beckham back in LA

Tuesday, July 14, 2009 LOS ANGELES: David Beckham returned to training with the L.A. Galaxy Monday and said his conflict with team mate Landon Donovan was water under the bridge.Donovan strongly criticized Beckham in excerpts of a soon to be released book "The Beckham Experiment" saying he was a bad team mate and an unsuitable captain. The former England skipper upset many in L.A. with his decision to extend his loan spell with Italian club AC Milan and miss the first half of the Major League Soccer season.Beckham hit back by calling Donovan "unprofessional" for airing his feelings in the media. But speaking to reporters Monday, Beckham said he had met with Donovan and club coach Bruce Arena to clear up matters."It's over. I'm not going to talk about what was said. That's between me, Landon and the manager. But it's finished. It's over. So we move on," said the midfielder who should return to U.S. action in Thursday's game away to the New York Red Bulls.Donovan regained the captain's armband after the Englishman's move to Italy and will retain the post -- something Beckham said he had no problem with."Landon's a good captain. He's a captain that leads by example. He's not a captain like myself that goes shouting at people. Every captain is different. Landon leads by example, by how he plays on the field," he said. But Beckham was still clearly upset by the questions raised about his own stint as captain."At the end of the day, that's something to ask all the players. I've always felt as captain I've made myself available for players and been there for the team. I've been captain for England for over 50 caps, and I've gotten on really well with the players," he said.Donovan said that he also wanted to put the discussions to bed and that he had regrets about the public spat."We're getting past it, we're moving on. There are a lot of things I regret. I regret the way that I went about this process and I also regret some of the things I said," he said. But the U.S. international said that some good might come out of the affair."I really believe that. I believe we're getting to the bottom of things we needed to get to. We're on the right path, and I'm excited about that," he said.Galaxy midfielder Chris Klein said he was not sure if Beckham and Donovan had made peace but he was confident there would be no knock-on effect in the dressing room.

Cuba's world-famous cigar festival closes in Havana

Sunday, February 28, 2010 HAVANA: Hundreds of wealthy merchants and cigar aficionados from all parts of the world gathered in Havana this week to bid high stakes for humidors full of premium cigars. Cuba's annual Habanos festival ended on Friday night with an auction of ornate humidors of cedar and mahogany stacked with hand-rolled stogies that raised 800,000 euros ($1.09 million dollars). Habanos S.A. executives this month said cigar sales fell 8 percent to $360 million in 2009, so they have created the Julieta, a smaller, milder version of the Romeo y Julieta cigar, aimed specifically at female smokers. Women now make up only 5 to 10 percent of customers for Habanos. But even with the creation of the Julieta, Garcia said Habanos has only modest hopes for 2010 sales, due largely to a weak economy in Spain, the biggest market for Cuban cigars. The flavor of premium tobacco relies on the soil and climate in which it is grown. The western province of Pinar Del Rio, famous fo...
