Wednesday, June 10, 2009 NOTTINGHAM: Sri Lanka defeated the West Indies by 15 runs in their final group match in the World Twenty20 here at Trent Bridge on Wednesday.Chasing an improbable target of 193 runs, the West Indies could reach 177-5 when the 20 overs were completed.Dwayne Bravo was the top scorer, who made 51 runs from 38 balls with five fours and two sixes. Among others, Ramnaresh Sarwan was unbeaten on 28 and opener Lendl Simmons scored 26 runs as no other batsman could make any significant contribution.For Sri Lanka, spinner Ajantha Mendis and pacer Lasith Malinga bagged two wickets each for 25 and 45 runs, respectively while Muttiah Muralitharan took one wicket.Earlier, Sanath Jayasuriya and Tillekeratne Dilshan hammered an opening stand of 124 as Sri Lanka piled up 192-5 after West Indies stand-in skipper Denesh Ramdin, the team's wicket-keeper, elected to field after winning the toss in good batting conditions.The opening pair took only 12.3 overs to decimate the West Indian attack in the last group C game that holds only academic interest after both teams qualified for the Super Eights at Australia's expense.Left-handed Jayasuriya, at 39 the oldest player in the 12-nation tournament, smashed 81 off 47 balls that was studded with 10 boundaries and three sixes.Dilshan, who contributed just 38 in the century partnership, went on to make 74 off 47 balls before he became one of seamer Lendl Simmons' four victims.The West Indies were without captain Chris Gayle, the hero of his team's shock win over Australia in the first match who was nursing a knee injury. Friday, August 14, 2009 MUMBAI: A 26-year-old woman died Thursday of H1N1 swine flu in the southern city of Bangalore, raising India's death toll from the virus to 20, authorities said.The death was the first reported in India's information technology capital, the Press Trust of India reported.Meanwhile in Pune, the worst-affected in India, two more victims of the virus died Thursday, raising the death toll in that western city near Mumbai to 12, the report said.
