Ronaldo seals deal with Real Madrid

Saturday, June 27, 2009 MADRID: Cristiano Ronaldo's move to Real Madrid from Manchester United has been finalised, the Spanish club confirmed, with the Portuguese set to officially join the Spanish giants on 1 July. The £80m fee breaks the previous world-record of £56m, set earlier this summer, which Real Madrid paid for Milan's Brazilian forward Kaka."Real Madrid and Manchester United have signed a final agreement for the transfer of the rights of Cristiano Ronaldo from 1 July," a statement on Real's website said.Ronaldo, who joined United in 2003 for £12.2m, is set to earn a reported €13m (£11m) a year in Spain, making him the highest paid footballer in the world. He will be presented at the Santiago Bernabeu on 6 July.

US troops in Iraq head to Afghanistan

Cuba's world-famous cigar festival closes in Havana

Sunday, February 28, 2010 HAVANA: Hundreds of wealthy merchants and cigar aficionados from all parts of the world gathered in Havana this week to bid high stakes for humidors full of premium cigars. Cuba's annual Habanos festival ended on Friday night with an auction of ornate humidors of cedar and mahogany stacked with hand-rolled stogies that raised 800,000 euros ($1.09 million dollars). Habanos S.A. executives this month said cigar sales fell 8 percent to $360 million in 2009, so they have created the Julieta, a smaller, milder version of the Romeo y Julieta cigar, aimed specifically at female smokers. Women now make up only 5 to 10 percent of customers for Habanos. But even with the creation of the Julieta, Garcia said Habanos has only modest hopes for 2010 sales, due largely to a weak economy in Spain, the biggest market for Cuban cigars.
