Thursday, June 04, 2009 SANDIAGO: Approximately 100 teachers have been arrested in the Chilean capital as they attempted to march to the government palace to demand payment of a compensation bonus.Anti-riot police fired water cannons and tear gas to disperse the teachers, who have been on strike for three weeks over the payment of a bonus that amounts to nearly US$2000.The conflict originated after the breakdown of negotiations between the teachers' union and the government regarding how the bonus would be paid.The strike involves some 80,000 public school teachers.Approximately 1 million primary and middle school students have been affected by the strike.
Friday, August 14, 2009 MUMBAI: A 26-year-old woman died Thursday of H1N1 swine flu in the southern city of Bangalore, raising India's death toll from the virus to 20, authorities said.The death was the first reported in India's information technology capital, the Press Trust of India reported.Meanwhile in Pune, the worst-affected in India, two more victims of the virus died Thursday, raising the death toll in that western city near Mumbai to 12, the report said.
