Junior World Cup Hockey to be held in Malaysia
ISLAMABAD: The Junior World Cup Hockey Tournament will be held next month in Malaysian city Johor Bahro and Singapore.The tournament will be co-hosted by Malaysia and Singapore and in all 20 teams will participate in the event to be played from June 7 to 21.The Pakistan Hockey Federation has announced a 20-member national team for taking part in the Junior World Cup.As per chairman selection committee Hasan Sardar, Shafqat Rasool will lead the national team. he will be deputized by Abdul Haseem Khan.Included among other players are goal keepers Imran Shah and Imran Butt, full backs Muhammad Ateeq, Kashif Ali and Amir Shahzad, half backs Muhammad Irfan, Fareed Ahmad, Muhammad Rashid, Mohsin Bilal and Sibtain Raza, forwards Waqas Sharif, Abbas Haider, Muhammad Zubair, Inayat Ullah, Muhammad Rizwan, Muhammad Taufeeq, Hassan Akhtar and Azlan Khan. Officials Khursheed Mohammad Junaid (chief coach), Ahmed Alam (goalkeeping coach), Danish Kaleem (assistant coach) and Dr Asad Abbas Shah will accompany the team.Pakistan will play their first match on June 7 against Russia, second on June 8 against Egypt, third on June 11 against Argentine while they will face Belgium in their fourth and the last pool match.


Indian tennis star Sania gets engaged
NEW DELHI :Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza has got engaged to a Hyderabad-based businessman but her family has ruled out an immediate wedding or early retirement for the star.The 22-year-old, who is the most successful woman tennis player of India, will continue playing the game and her father Imran Mirza said it will take a while before the two families decide on when the wedding would take place."This is to confirm that Sania Mirza is engaged to Mr. Muhammad Sohrab Mirza, whose family hails from the city of Hyderabad. Although not related, the two families have had friendly ties for several decades. However, the wedding is not expected to take place for a while," Imran Mirza said.Sania's career has been marred by injuries and countless controversies but despite the off-court woes, she has been the lone flag bearer of Indian women's tennis internationally.
ICC announces Champions Trophy schedule
LAHORE: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the schedule of the Champions Trophy.As per schedule, Pakistan will play their first match in the tournament on September 24 against the West Indies.Pakistan will face their traditional rivals India in their second match on September 26 while they compete with Australia on September 28.Meanwhile, the ICC has decided that income from the Pakistan-India Twenty20 match will be given to the people affected from the attack on the Sri Lankan team.

Snake bite deaths

Monday, July 06, 2009 COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan government recorded some 33,000 snake bites in 2008, with most of the victims coming from remote villages.The Department of Government Information said in a statement that most of the snake bite cases could be fatal if neglected.The statement said snake bites are often neglected in Sri Lanka as victims do not seek treatment at hospitals where advanced medication is available. Instead, the victims rush to traditional type of treatment which could be a risk, reports Xinhua.Snake bites death at domestic level, outside hospitals, go unrecorded, said the statement.Most victims of snake bite are from the rural and remote villages where there is no electricity after dusk.Statistics show that Sri Lanka has over 90 species of snake with around 10 species possessing venom capable of killing a human being.In Sri Lanka the annual death rate due to snake bite envenoming is one of the highest in the world being 6 in 100,000 population.

Suicide bombings kill 18 in Iraq

Thursday, August 13, 2009 MOSUL: At least 18 people, most of them members of the ancient Yazidi religious sect, were killed when two suicide bombers blew themselves up on Thursday in a packed cafe in northern Iraq, a local government official said.At least 31 people were also wounded after the bombers detonated suicide belts packed with explosives in the cafe in Kalaa town, in the district of Sanjar, local district chief Dakheel Qassem Hasoon, told a foreign news agency."Two suicide bombers entered the Cafe Barbaroz at 4:30 pm (1330 GMT) and blew themselves up, killing 18 civilians and wounding 31. Most of the victims were Yazidis," Hasoon said.Kalaa, northwest of the insurgent stronghold of Mosul in northern Nineveh province is predominantly populated by the minority Yazidi religious sect, as well as Arabs and Kurds.The attack is the deadliest since Monday, when 51 people were killed across Iraq, including 28 members of the tiny Shabak sect cut down when two truck bombs det...
