Karachi Nazim, Mustafa Kamal placed among top-three world mayors

KARACHI: Reputed journal, Foreign Policy in its report has declared Karachi Nazim, Syed Mustafa Kamal the second best mayor of the year 2008 world.Foreign Policy report titled ‘The Mayor of the moment’ said that Germany’s Berlin City Mayor, Klaus Wowereit, 55 topped the list among the best mayors of the world for the current year and Karachi Nazim, Syed Mustafa Kamal, 36 placed second on the basis of his last three years’ performance.Global Cities Index named this survey has assessed the performance of the mayors of world’s major cities giving special importance to creating better opportunity for investment in the city and city planning. The journal eulogizing Karachi Nazim for his hard work declared him the symbol of making a difference in the city and innovation in city planning. Karachi Nazim is playing a key-role in strengthening the international ties, promoting foreign investment and tourism, said the report. It further said that Nazim Mustafa Kamal has changed the outlook of the city in a short time and his slogan that Karachi is going to emerge as another Dubai in the region declared most admired.

Cuba's annual Habanos festival ended on Friday night with an auction of ornate humidors of cedar and mahogany stacked with hand-rolled stogies that raised 800,000 euros ($1.09 million dollars). Habanos S.A. executives this month said cigar sales fell 8 percent to $360 million in 2009, so they have created the Julieta, a smaller, milder version of the Romeo y Julieta cigar, aimed specifically at female smokers. Cyprus lace to be declared UNESCO cultural heritage

Tuesday, September 08, 2009 NICOSIA: Traditional hand-made lace produced in the Larnaca district village of Lefkara in Cyprus known as lefkaritiko includeded in UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). Soseilos said that the relevant UNESCO committee has already decided to include lefkaritiko in its list of the world’s ICH, a more recent addition to UNESCO’s long-standing list of World Heritage sites, and the decision will be formally announced at the UNESCO General Assembly next month. The tradition of needlework and lace embroidery in Lefkara goes back centuries.
