Chronology of bomb attacks in India

MUMBAI: Some 257 killed and more than 1,000 injured in 15 co-ordinated bomb attacks in Bombay on March 12,1993. The attacks were seen as retaliation for earlier anti-Muslim riots that left hundreds dead. 46 people were killed and more than 200 injured in 13 car bombs in the city of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu on December 13, 2001.Seven killed when five gunmen, one wearing a suicide vested, attack the parliament complex in New Delhi. The assailants all died in the attack in August 25, 2003.At least 45 people killed and 150 injured when twin car bombs exploded, one near the Taj Mahal hotel, and the other in a jewellery market near the Mumbai Devi temple in central Mumbai. On October 29, 2005, 61 killed and at least 210 were injured when three bombs explode in markets in New Delhi two days before the Hindu festival of Diwali.At least 200 killed and 700 injured when seven bombs exploded in crowded commuter trains during the evening rush hour near Mumbai in July 11, 2006.At least 42 people killed when two bombs exploded in Hyderabad's Lumbini park and a restaurant on August 25, 2007. At least 60 killed in 9 bombs in Jaipur on May 13, 2008. On July 26, 2008, at least 45 people killed in a string of bomb attacks in Ahmedabad. Within an 17 bombs exploded in residential areas, market places, hospitals and on public transport.At least 40 killed in a string of bomb explosions in north-eastern state of Assam. More than 150 others were injured, mostly in the main city of Guwahati on October 30, 2008.

Tennis: Clijsters wins US Open, second time

NEW YORK: Kim Clijsters of Belgium won the US Open on Sunday by defeating Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark 7-5, 6-3 in the final.She is the first mother to win a Grand Slam title since Evonne Goolagong in 1980, the victory coming just five weeks after she returned to the sport following a 27-month retirement. She was the first wildcard, man or woman, to win a US Open title in the history of the tournament.

42 killed in wave of Iraq bombings

BAGHDAD: At least 42 people were killed and nearly 100 wounded in a spate of bomb attacks near the restive northern Iraqi city of Mosul and in the capital Baghdad on Monday, police said. In the deadliest single attack, two booby-trapped lorries exploded before dawn in the village of Khaznah, east of Mosul, leaving 25 people dead and 70 others wounded. Thirty-five houses were destroyed in the village, which is home to members of the tiny Shabak community, a sect of Kurdish origin. In Baghdad, two car bombs went off as day labourers were gathering in the early morning hours looking for jobs.The first bomb exploded at Hay al-Amel, in the west of the capital, killing nine people and injuring 46. The second bomb attack in Shurta Arbaa in the north of the city killed seven people and wounded 35 others.
